Quick Explaination of how to use AC View
Step 1: Load the portal file.
AC View tries to determine where AC:ToD was installed and selects the normal client_portal.dat file. It displays it guess on the file name on the Load line up top. If this is wrong, or would like to change it to refer to another file such as the portal_highres.dat do so. Then press the "Load" button. This load will take a while.
Step 2: Find the portal file entry
When the file is loade you will see a single entry in the box along the left side title "portal". Clicking on that will show all the groups of portal files. Some of intrest are 06000000 (graphics) and 0A0000000 (sounds) .
Select that group will break down the the groups to the last two hex digits. This is to keep the list size manageable. Clicking that sub group entry will show the portal file numbers and thier length in bytes.
Selecting that entry will show the portal file.
Step 3: Options if viewing
By default the element will dump the file entry in hex and text with 16 bytes per line. The following options are available when viewing the file:
You can resize the form to see the the full text line or full image at once.
Saving graphics:
Graphics that ACview is capable of displaying, can be saved in Compuserve GIF, Windows Bitmap, Jpeg, or Portable Network Graphics modes (Icon currently does not work correctly, but it will try). Just select the format you want and press save it will save the file with last four hex character of the file number and the extention of the format you chose (i.e. 5D15.gif)
